The Limelight with Angelika Schriber

Angelika Schriber is one of the most respected and revered riders on and off the water. At the 2011 Wake Park World Championships Ange rode in the Features Only division against all guys, to no one’s surprise, she won. A few minutes later she was pulled off the dock and took 2nd place in the Pro Women’s division. To say the least Ange doesn’t just sit around and wait for the next big thing, she makes it happen; constantly producing videos, photos, and interviews for digital publication, magazines, local media, or just for fun.

2012 has been Ange’s best year yet. She won “Female Trick of the Year” at the 2012 Transworld Wakeboarding Magazine Wake Awards, and “Best Female Ambassador for Wakeboarding” by Unleashed International Wake Mag, Ange has traveled to almost every stop WWA Wake Park World Series, including two stops of the Monster Energy WWA Wake Park Triple Crown presented by AllianceWake.com.

WWA: Tell us about yourself.
Angelika Schriber: I am originally from South Africa and moved with my parents to Cairns, Australia in 2005. I have an Australian Bachelor Degree in International Business and Tourism. This is my 3rd season competing on the International pro circuit. 6 months of the year I travel the globe competing, filming and promoting my sponsors on the cable wakeboard international scene. I am a person that loves the water; I’m positive and I enjoy meeting new people around the world.

WWA: How did you get into the sport?
Ange: My dad was the one that got me on the water at the age of 5 ½. I started off waterskiing professionally where I transitioned and competed in boat wakeboarding. Then the cable park opened close to my home in Cairns, and I started going to the cable every day, got hooked, and never looked back.

WWA: Who has been most influential in your development of wakeboarding?
Ange: All the Riders I have had the chance to ride with. Matty Hasler is definitely one that influences me and pushes me to be the best as we ride a lot together.

WWA: How has the 2012 season been so far?
Ange: One of the best seasons I have ever had with all my recent accomplishments. A crazy and fun journey of traveling the globe that hasn’t ended yet ☺

WWA: What has been your favorite trip this year and why?
Ange: There are so many trips that have been incredible. Thailand at the beginning of the season was amazing. Being able to ride everyday at Thai Wake Park and learn new tricks was definitely a good way to start off the season strong.

WWA: What is your mindset coming into the 2012 Wake Park World Championships?
Ange: Feeling strong, healthy and have a positive mindset to be ready to ride.

WWA: Al Forsan has a plethora of new features including rails and kickers; how will they play a role in this year’s championships compared to the 2011 contest?
Ange: Having more features will make the competition more technical; the riding will be more intense and great to watch, as it will show more diversity.

WWA: This year’s contest is on the opposite cable from last year (Clockwise cable); how will you adapt your riding to accommodate to this cable?
Ange: I think it’s exciting to try something new; I haven’t had a lot of practice this year on al left foot cable, but ready for the challenge and will have to push myself to adapt.

WWA: What rider will you be most prepared to compete against?
Ange: Maxine Sapulette for sure as she won the worlds last year.

WWA: Who will be the top 3 finishers in your division?
Ange: Its difficult to say, it depends on the day of competition, it’s anyone’s game.

WWA: Any particular person that you’ll have your eyes set on to beat in the karting race?
Ange: Daniel Grant, he’s a little machine on the Go Kart.

WWA: What about in the paintball arena? Who do you want to shoot?
Ange: I am so scared of paintball it hurts so much and I always bruise, lol. So not sure if I want to try it, but maybe I can be persuaded.

WWA: Who would you like to thank?
Ange: I just want to say thank you to my sponsors CTRL, Rixen Cableways and Breathe. My family for there amazing support and Matty’s parents for supporting me as well.
