Qualifying Continues for the Malibu Boats Tokyo Pro Presented by Rockstar

This innovative event hosted in the middle of Tokyo marks the second round of the Malibu Evolution Pro Series. “Returning to Japan for a competition has been great,” said WWA President Shannon Starling. “We have an incredible field of athletes entered in the event including more than 30 Japanese riders competing with the world’s best.”

With great conditions in Tokyo Bay, and 24 professional men entered in the qualifying round of the event, the competition was fierce on the water. It was a family affair for Malibu Pro Team riders Raph and Oli Derome who both won their heats, with Raph posting a 91.67, the highest score of the day. In each of the eight heats, the top two riders advanced to Saturday’s quarterfinals.

“The conditions were nearly perfect today, which allowed for some great runs by everyone in the field,” said Raph Derome “The passion and the excitement of the fans, and just competing right in the middle of Tokyo is so exciting. I had some extra adrenaline pumping through me before my run, and the wake from the Malibu Wakesetter 22 MXZ provided me with a chance to post a big score.”

In the Pro Women’s division, the six heat winners from the field of 20 riders all earned a spot in Saturday’s semifinals with Larisa Morales just edging Melissa Marquardt for the best run of the day. Japanese riders, Yuzuki and Rumi Matsuura gave the local fans something to cheer about as they both advanced.
