Malibu WWA Rider Experience Canada Showcased Progressive Riding and a Bright Future in Wake at the Final Stop of the Series

Peterborough, Ontario, CA (August 13, 2018) – For the second consecutive year, the Ontario wake community welcomed new riders and returning competitors alike to their well-known family atmosphere built on progressive riding. Hosted by Town and Country Marine, Chad Sharpe, Raph Derome, Oli Derome, Lewy Watt, and Tarah Mikacich, kicked off the weekend with Freeride Friday giving competitors an opportunity to receive the industry’s best instruction as they prepare for Saturday’s competition. Paying tribute to the likes of Chad and the Derome’s homeland, Saturday’s competition saw some incredible performances, proving that there is more Canadian talent coming down the pipeline. Surfgate Sunday closed the deal on a perfect weekend, with Malibu’s massive waves from the 24 MXZ and 23 LSV solidifying a good time had by all.

We couldn’t have pulled it off without Malibu Boats and of course a huge shout out to Town and Country Marine for hosting us in Canada again this year!” said WWA Executive Director, Corrie Wilson.

Inspired riders from Freeride Friday, brought the stoke back to the water for Saturday’s amateur competition. Competitors of all ages and skill levels were cheered on by the crowd on the shoreline, paired with endless high fives and fist bumps off the dock.

The Jr. Boys division got the day going with some first-time contest riders all showed solid riding. Wyatt Spalding rode clean taking first place with a score of 93.00. Ian Hurlbert scored 75.00 followed by Wesley Brennan in third with 66.33.

The Girls division saw just as much athletic talent on the water with Avery Spalding going huge to land some super stylish grabs for a score of 83.33 for the win. Callie Zellenrath came in second with another all-time performance for 73.00, followed by Harmony Meirik in third scoring 70.00.

The Veterans division saw local Jason Kurz with his signature style scoring 63.00 for the first place win. Ryan Jennings came in second throwing a H/S melon 180 for a final score of 60.00.

The Wakesurf competition cranked up the heat behind the world-class wave of the Malibu 24 MXZ.  Ryan Jennings hit the water again and showed some sick progression, smacking the lip for the win with a score of 61.67. Cassandra Jennings placed second scoring 58.33.

Ryan Galea punched his Pro Card yet again with the most impressive run of the day, scoring 79.33 after throwing a huge wrapped KGB and multiple spins to seal the deal. Jon McTavish brought up the pack in second with solid grabbed inverts scoring 69.00, followed by Marcus Ellis in third with a 34.00.


The Jr. Pro Men division gave the crowd a look into the future of wake, with Cam Spalding taking a huge win with 73.00, putting down switch and regular 540s. Jesse Jarrett landed a steezy T/S 360 scoring 65.67, followed by Cole Silverthorn in third with 39.67.

Surfgate Sunday brought families, friends, and first-timers back out to the water to catch an endless set behind Malibu’s legendary 24 MXZ wave.
