ORLANDO, FL (July 8th, 2020) – As a result of the ongoing effects of COVID-19 the state of Utah has issued a statewide mandate restricting events from happening until further notice. Adhering to the governor’s recent request the World Wake Association (WWA) and Malibu Boats made the decision to move the Malibu Rider Experience West, originally scheduled to take place at the Quail Creek Reservoir in Hurricane, UT. This final stop to the 2020 Malibu Rider Experience Series will now take place July 31st – August 1st in Caldwell, ID at Broadside Harbor Ski Lakes with host dealer Idaho Watersports. This two-day stop will kick off the weekend with Freeride Friday before heading into Saturday’s Regional Championships.
In an effort to continue minimizing the spread of COVID-19 while in consideration for the health and safety of the riders, families, and staff, social distancing guidelines will be implemented at all WWA events. The WWA will ensure these procedures adhere to and operate in compliance with the most recent state and CDC guidelines. A specific plan detailing out any new measures will be posted by the WWA ahead of this final stop to the Malibu Rider Experience Series and will go into effect immediately.
Due to the current restrictions in place as a result of COVID-19 the 2020 WWA Wakeboard National Championships will have capped entries for this year and will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. There will be no priority of entry into the Nationals based on previous placement or WWA competition history, the only registration priority will be given to athletes who have competed in their respective WWA Regional Championship for this year. All athletes competing in their respective WWA Regional Championship will be able to register for Nationals regardless of their regionals placement and will receive higher seeding in the preliminary rounds of competition. Athletes who register for Nationals without placement from a regional qualifier will receive lower seeding in the first rounds of competition, if and when entry spots become available.
Since 2013 the Malibu Rider Experience has hosted thousands of riders from first-timers to those making the transition to pro, while building local and national wake communities that fully encompass the spectrum of the sport that makes wake unlike anything it’s path. The first day of Rider Experience West will take place on Friday with ‘Freeride Friday’ featuring freeriding for wakeboarding and wakesurfing, product demos, instruction from Malibu Pro athletes and a Judges Experience. This fully inclusive day in all things wake will provide the opportunity for the entire family, friends and neighbors alike to familiarize themselves with the course, receive tips on the water and in the boat, and test out the industry’s latest products. The WWA Regional Championships and Pro Card Qualifiers will be held on Saturday giving amateur riders the chance to compete with riders in their region and qualify for the WWA Wakeboard National Championships and aspiring pro’s the opportunity to earn professional status. Pulled by the Malibu Wakesetter Series, riders can expect to see new locations, new gear to demo and of course everyone’s favorite main event, the Jr. Pro Series! Information and registration can be found by visiting TheWWA.com/RiderExperience.
All riders must hold a current WWA Pro Card in order to register in the pro division at any WWA wakeboard event. The top 15 riders on the 2019 WWA Wakeboard World Rankings list will retain their Pro Card for the 2020 season. All other riders must obtain their Pro Card at one of six qualifying events.
